Since it was quite difficult to prototype a game involving a lot of rfid_readers we decided to change our concept a little. Our goal was to come up with a concept, that needs only one reader and is still capable of making the decisions we wanted.

So Oyvind dreamt our final solution and came up with a concept, that involves a slide where the tag is read at the beginning, then slides to a decision maker and is sorted into the right or wrong spot.

After some sketching around we came up with some additional excitement with which we could enhance our new concept. First of all a kind of maze structure with twisting and turning wheels and stoppers for the tags which are now inside of little balls.

Turning Japanese

We then added some turning wheel which is the starting point for our tag balls. And we decided to make the balls bigger, so that actual real objects could fit into.

The machine started to look a little bit like a Japanese gachapon machine, which could be found on every corner in Japan. The turning of the wheel to get to the actual toy, which is inside of the gachapon machine is a very crucial element for the excitement that surrounds this machine. If we were able to fit our machine with that kind of wheel it would add a lot of excitement and some addiction to the inserting of the tag_balls.

Back to basics

However this concept would give the project a very plastic look and feel and since we were rather going for some “wooden magic” we went back to simplify the whole thing again. The tag_balls are now tag_discs and the whole thing looks now sth. like this:

You insert the discs at the top, they then slide trough the maze and end up in a non visible part, where the decision of being wrong or right is made. They then roll into the final part which is visible again or if the wrong disc is inserted they simply roll out of the box. This concept involves only one rfid_reader, a motor to move the decision maker, a loudspeaker for some audio feedback and of course some brain(arduino board..).
